Match Report: Gor Mahia Queens 1-1 Kayole Starlets
We extended our unbeaten run to 17 matches with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia Queens at Makongeni Grounds. Heading into the game, Gor Mahia occupied 10th place while we led the table, six points clear of Bandari Queens and Mathare Women. Despite heavy rains challenging the field conditions, we started on the front foot.
In the 3rd minute, Nuru delivered a precise long ball to Drailer, who burst past the Gor Mahia defense to score her fifth goal of the season. The first half saw us dominate, with Valerian Nabwire, Molly Owuor, and Salome Drailer all coming close to furthering our lead—each chance thwarted by Gor Mahia’s resilient goalkeeper. Defensively, Chris Kach, who began the match as a center-back, stood firm alongside Shalen Njeri to secure a slender lead at halftime.
The second half brought a rejuvenated Gor Mahia side determined to equalize. Early on, our goalkeeper Pauline Kathuruh made several crucial saves. In the 51st minute, Shalin Otieno, who had been relatively quiet in the second half, was substituted for Esther Wanjiru to inject fresh attacking energy.
Gor Mahia’s persistence paid off in the 72nd minute when, following a strong parry from Kathuruh, the rebound was slotted home.
In response, Coach Busu introduced Melissa Vivian and Sarah Chalovu for Nuru Hadima and Valerian Nabwire in a bid to regain the advantage. Both Chalovu and Wanjiru had late chances to seal the win, but their efforts narrowly missed the target.
The match concluded as a 1-1 draw, leaving us at 44 points—four points ahead of Mathare Women (40 points) and six ahead of Bandari Queens (38 points). With two crucial home fixtures remaining against Sunderland Samba and Barcelona SC, the team is determined to finish the season on a high and secure the league title.
In the post-match press conference, Chris Kach—voted Player of the Match—stated,
“We are mentally and technically ready for the final two fixtures of the season.”
