Komarock Derby Match Review: Kayole Starlets 1-0 Mathare Women FC

The highly anticipated Komarock Derby lived up to expectations as we edged Mathare Women FC 1-0 in a thrilling encounter. With both teams vying for Premier League promotion, the match was a tense, end- to-end battle that showcased their attacking prowess and defensive resilience. Mathare Women started strongly, pressing high and creating early chances. However, our defense and goalkeeper were up to the task, with the shot-stopper making a crucial save—punching the ball over the crossbar after a well-taken free kick from Mathare.

On the other end, we had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Lavyne Achola stepped up for a free kick, but her effort found the side netting. Both teams displayed attacking intent, but solid defensive work on both ends saw the first half end in a goalless draw. We made an immediate change at halftime, bringing in Melissa Vivian for Drailer Salome.

The substitution seemed to inject new energy into the team, and within two minutes, the deadlock was broken. Midfielder Mercy Mang’uro rose highest to connect with a well-delivered corner from Nuru Hadima, thumping a bullet header past the Mathare goalkeeper to give the home side the lead.

Buoyed by the goal, the girls continued to push forward, with Molly Owuor impressing down the right wing. In a bid to strengthen the attack, we made further substitutions: Chris Kach replaced Molly Owuor, and new signing Valerian Nabwire was handed her debut against her former team, coming in for Esther Wanjiru.

Mathare Women came close to equalizing, but Pauline Kathuruh remained solid, pulling off a crucial save to deny Mathare’s striker who had broken through on goal. As the game neared its end, we had another opportunity to double our lead when Nuru Hadima was fouled just outside the box. Mercy Mang’uro took the resulting free kick, but Mathare’s keeper punched it away, and Shalen Njeri was unable to capitalize on the rebound.

The final whistle blew as we securing a crucial 1-0 victory, reclaiming our bragging rights in the Komarock Derby. The win extends our lead at the top of the table to eight points, sitting on 35 points. We are now unbeaten in nine consecutive matches, maintaining an impressive defensive record of not conceding in the last nine games and remaining unbeaten at home this season.
